The Levada do Rabaçal is a gigantic state levada irrigating the western parishes of Calheta municipality, including Arco da Calheta, Estreito da Calheta, Prazeres, Fajã da Ovelha and Ponta do Pargo. A law of 1849 authorised the government to finish it; Conselheiro José Silvestre Ribeiro especially promoted its construction, and Fontes Pereira de Melo visited the works.
