Adams was a physician who wrote on Madeira's climate in 1801. In 1802 he asked the council for foundlings on whom to test smallpox vaccine, and he reported his results.

  1. Dr J. Adams was licensed by the governor and captain-general to vaccinate foundlings against smallpox, apparently the first vaccination in Madeira; the Funchal town council received his request for foundlings on 27 October 1802.
