Oak (Quercus Robur) / Carvalho (Quercus Robur)

A widely spread European tree throughout the island, introduced in 1803 by the first Count Carvalhal. It produces good wood, and its fruits are advantageously used as feed for livestock. The shoots and new leaves of the oak, properly crushed, are widely used on the island in the treatment of whitlows. Roasted acorns ground into powder are used to prepare a beverage suitable for people who are not allowed to drink coffee.
