In ancient times, there was a plan to build a pier in front of the Funchal Customs House, and in 1824, Brigadier Raposo and Major Sant’Ana came to Madeira to choose a location for the construction of a pier and a wharf. The chosen location was the lowlands of S. Tiago, but despite the significant amount of 37 contos spent on the acquisition and preparation of materials for the works, they were never started.
