History

Local Judges / Juízes Pedâneos

They existed in Madeira and were also called twenty judges. They performed functions in villages located a league or more away from the headquarters, and judged issues of fines, damages, and actions on movable property of small value.

Under the absolute regime, the District was divided into terms, and the terms into twenties.

There were local judges in Ribeira Brava, Câmara de Lobos, and Caniço, at a time when these places belonged to the municipality of Funchal, and it was the City Council that appointed them.
