Hortelã

Common name for Mentha viridis and M. silvestris, plants of the Labiatae family, the former of which seems to be indigenous. The leaves of M. viridis, when added to milk, give it a particular flavor. Both of these species are cultivated in Madeiran gardens, although M. silvestris is much less common than M. viridis.
