Black Nightshade (Solanum nigrum) / Herva-de-Santa-Maria (Solanum nigrum)

Solanaceous plant with ovate or rhomboidal leaves, usually sinuate-toothed; white flowers gathered in corymbiform clusters; black berries when ripe. It is found in rubble, walls, cultivated places, etc., in Funchal and its surroundings. The leaves of this plant are used as anodynes; by adding oil to them after being cut and crushed, they form the so-called Aires plaster or ointment, very useful in the treatment of wounds and inflammations.
