Castellão

Description of the Castellão red grape variety, synonym of tinta castellõa, grown on Porto Santo and nearly extinct on Madeira.

medium-sized or small, very similar to those of the negra mole, but with the lobes almost always clearly visible; bunches cylindrical or cylindrical-conical, usually winged, dense or fairly dense; berries globose, as a rule very unequal, somewhat firmer than in the negra mole, sometimes very small (8 millimetres), sometimes medium-sized (15–18 millimetres), red, with pale pulp, very sweet; pedicels regular. – It is a synonym of tinta castellõa, and probably also of negrinho. It is grown on Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) and was once common on Madeira, where it seems to be extinct or almost extinct.
