Travassos Valdez (Francisco)

Francisco Travassos Valdez, son of the Conde de Bonfim (governor of Madeira 1827–28), wrote two books on West Africa containing several references to Madeira, where he lived as a child and which he revisited.

He was the son of the Count of Bonfim, who was governor and captain-general of Madeira from 1827 to 1828. He wrote Six years of a traveller’s life in Western Africa (London 1861) and Africa Occidental (Lisbon 1864). Both works contain several references to Madeira, where the author lived as a child and to which he returned on the occasion of his visit to West Africa.
