Note on the Tavares surname in Madeira, traced to Joana Tavares (15th century) and Bernardo Tavares de Sousa (after 1580).
Around the middle of the 15th century there lived in Madeira Joana Tavares, who was married to Vasco Esteves, nicknamed ‘o dos bons vinhos’ (he of the good wines). After 1580 Bernardo Tavares de Sousa, of noble origin, settled on this island. It is to be believed that the individuals with the surname Tavares who have lived here descend from these two stocks.
