Loggerhead turtle (Caouana Oaretta)
Original title: Tartaruga (Caouana Oaretta)
Loggerhead turtle, seen in seas near Madeira and valued for its meat; its eggs have never been found in the archipelago.
An amphibious reptile of the subclass Chelonia that appears in the seas near Madeira. Madeirans prize its meat, although it is less tasty than that of the tropical turtle. Its eggs have never been found on Madeira or Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’), and it is therefore supposed that the animal lays them in the sands of some of the Cape Verde islands.
Fishermen catch the turtle when they find it asleep on the surface of the ocean.
