Stanford (Charles Thomas)
Sir Charles Thomas Stanford (1858–1932), a British baronet and writer who lived in Madeira for some years and wrote books about the island, including Leaves from a Madeira Garden.
This distinguished British subject, who lived in Madeira for some years and held our island in the warmest affection, as he amply demonstrated in his exquisite books, was born in 1858 and died in England on 7 March 1932. His literary works include Leaves from a Madeira Garden and the engaging novel Ace of Hearts, whose plot unfolds on this island. He was a distinguished writer and a man of rare intellectual culture. He had been awarded the title of ‘Baronet of the United Kingdom’.
