Smuts (General Jan Christaan)
Boer general Jan Smuts called at Madeira on 7 June 1921 aboard the Arundel Castle, was officially received, toured Funchal and left the same day.
This former Boer general arrived in Madeira aboard the British steamer Arundel Castle on 7 June 1921. He was greeted on board by the Civil Governor and the Military Commander, and military honours were rendered to him by an infantry detachment drawn up on Avenida Gonçalves Zarco.
General Smuts, who visited various parts of the city and its surroundings, among them Monte (‘hill’) and Terreiro da Luta (‘ground of the fight’), left for England the same day.
