Risco
A scenic spot at Rabaçal where a levada was cut into a sheer cliff with a waterfall, named after the danger faced by its builders.
This is one of the spots at Rabaçal most worth visiting, for the majestic panoramas it offers. It takes its name from the risk (risco) run by the workmen who built the channel on the high, sheer cliff down which the waters fall. The Poço do Risco, a pool at the bottom of the ravine some 80 metres below the levada (irrigation channel), is also worth a visit, although it cannot be reached without some effort. The waters of the Risco come from a pond (lagoa), or excavation, on the edge of the Paul da Serra (‘upland marsh’).
