Reid

The Reid family, descended from William Reid, an Englishman who opened a hotel in Funchal in the 1840s; his sons donated nearly 10,000 volumes to the Funchal Municipal Library.

A family surname descending from the Englishman William Reid, who came to Madeira in 1844 or 1845 and set up a hotel here in the old Rua do Mercado de São João. His sons William and Alfred Reid, who carried on their father’s line of business, wrote a short work in 1881 entitled Madeira, a guide book of useful and varying information. Their chief service to the island, however, was their gift to the Funchal Municipal Library (Biblioteca Municipal do Funchal) of nearly 10,000 volumes from the library of the late Madeiran João Joaquim de Freitas.
