Parish regedores

Original title: Regedores de Paróquia

This entry explains that parish regedores (local administrative officers) have existed in Madeira since 1838, succeeding the parish commissioners appointed in 1834.

Regedores (parish administrative officers) have existed in Madeira since 1838. On 16 November of that year the Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal) sent the municipal administrator (administrador do concelho, the government's representative) the names of the persons proposed to hold the office of regedor in the parishes of the municipality (concelho). Before the regedores there were the parish commissioners, appointed in 1834.

Chronology
  • The prefect created police commissioners, parish commissioners and constables under the new liberal administration.
  • The office of parish regedor was introduced in Madeira.
  • The Funchal municipal council sent the municipal administrator its nominations for the parish regedores.
