Describes the salaried office of preacher to the Funchal Municipal Council, who delivered sermons at official festivities, and names two holders.

The Funchal Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal do Funchal) once had a salaried preacher, who was required to deliver the sermons at official festivities. In 1831 Father Friar José de Jesus was appointed preacher to the Council; before him the post had been held by Friar João José da Purificação, appointed in 1829 with a salary of 24,000 réis (old Portuguese money of account; 1$000 = 1,000 réis, 1:000$000 = one conto = 1,000,000 réis) a year.
