Ponta do Pargo (lighthouse)
Original title: Ponta do Pargo (Farol da)
The lighthouse at Ponta do Pargo, Madeira's westernmost point, long demanded and first lit in 1922.
On the heights of the projection of the coastline known as Ponta do Pargo (‘sea bream point’), at the place called Vigia (‘lookout’), stands the lighthouse building. Its construction had long been demanded, but it became a concrete reality only in 1922, when that coast began to be lit. We have read somewhere that this lighthouse ‘emits three successive flashes of white light with a power of 5,500 carcels, each of 0.5 of a second, at intervals of 3.5 seconds’.
