Rock dove (Columba livia)
Original title: Pombo Bravo (Columba livia)
The rock dove, which nests on coastal cliffs and ravines throughout Madeira and, when kept in dovecotes, is called the domestic pigeon.
A columbid bird found on the seaside cliffs and in the ravines throughout the island. It is sociable, forming small groups during the breeding season that settle on the inaccessible cliffs of the coast. Its nest is rough, and the clutch, of two slightly bluish-white eggs, may be laid twice a year.
It is also known as pombo da rocha, pombinho and pombo doméstico (domestic pigeon), the last name being used only when it is raised in the dovecotes that abound throughout the island.
