Pinto Correia (Armando Eduardo)
Biography of Armando Eduardo Pinto Correia (1897–1943), army officer, journalist and colonial official born in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, author of books on Timor.
He was born in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos (‘seals’ den’) on 3 September 1897, the son of Guilherme Pinto Correia and Dona Inácia Augusta de Seixas Alves Correia. He attended the Faculties of Science of Lisbon and Coimbra, and then the War School (Escola de Guerra), and is at present a lieutenant in the machine-gun company of the 27th Infantry Regiment (regimento de infantaria n.º 27). He was mobilised for the Portuguese Expeditionary Corps (C. E. P.) and spent some time in the trenches at Kadingham, where a British battalion was stationed, and was commended by his superiors for the service he rendered there (1921).
Since 1911 he has contributed to various newspapers in Funchal, Ponta Delgada, Coimbra and Lisbon, always standing out for the elegance and colour of his prose. He was director of Vida Academica (1913) and chief editor of the Jornal de Coimbra (1916), and in 1921 published the pamphlet Um Poeta em frangalhos.
Devoting himself to colonial life, he lived for some years in our overseas province of Timor, holding public office, and rendered notable services there that were much appreciated by the higher authorities in the mother country. He published two fine books: O Gentio de Timor and Timor de lés a lés. Having recently gone to the province of Mozambique, he died in Quelimane on 29 January 1943.
