Mallard

Original title: Pato Marreco

The mallard (Anas boschas), known in Madeira as pato marreco, a common domestic bird on Madeira and Porto Santo that also arrives wild.

The duck known by this name in Madeira is Anas boschas, a domestic bird very common on Madeira and Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’), which nevertheless also sometimes reaches the archipelago in the wild, in which case it belongs to the group of wild ducks. Its meat is highly prized, but its eggs are less tasty than hens’ eggs.
