Passos Freitas (Humberto de)
Biography of a Funchal-born writer who described a boat voyage round Madeira and helped political deportees escape from the Gonçalo Aires lazaretto.
He was born in Funchal and wrote ‘The Ornithological Expedition to the Delta of the Danube’ and Vinte e um dias em bote, 1923, an account of a sea trip round Madeira. Passos Freitas boldly assisted the escape of several political deportees held in the Lazareto de Gonçalo Aires (‘Gonçalo Aires quarantine hospital’), as mentioned on p. 350 of vol. I of this Elucidário.
