Nunes (Father Manuel)

Original title: Nunes (Padre Manuel)

Padre Manuel Nunes (1848–1892), parish priest of São Gonçalo, noted preacher and satirical poet.

He was born in the parish (freguesia) of Paul do Mar (‘marsh by the sea’) in 1848 and died on 28 December 1892 in the parish of São Gonçalo (‘St Gonçalo’), where he was parish priest. He was one of our most distinguished preachers, his sermons being remarkable for their elegance of form and correctness of language. He cultivated poetry with brilliance, above all the satirical genre, in which he became very well known here, and some of his compositions stand comparison with those of our own Nicolau Tolentino.
