Nunes (Filipe José)

Filipe José Nunes (1824–c.1890), Madeiran priest, curate of the Sé parish and combative journalist of O Popular.

He was born in the parish (freguesia) of Monte (‘hill’) in 1824 and died in this city around 1890. For many years he was curate of the parish of the Sé (Funchal Cathedral) and held the royal grant of honorary canon. He possessed uncommon learning and distinguished himself as a journalist, especially in the periodical O Popular (‘The People’s Paper’), waging fierce battles in the press in which his excesses of language at times recalled the diatribes of José Agostinho de Macedo. At the time of his death he had a collection of sermons ready for publication, but it was never printed.
