Nóbrega

The Nóbrega family of Madeira, descended from Simão de Nóbrega, founder of the chapel of Santa Quitéria, with a possible second branch from Gaspar de Nóbrega.

The family descends from Simão de Nóbrega, who founded the chapel of St Quiteria (Santa Quitéria) in Santo António (‘St Anthony’). In the time of the fifth captain-donatary (capitão-donatário), Simão Gonçalves da Câmara, there lived in Madeira a certain Gaspar de Nóbrega, who was ouvidor (judicial officer of the donatary or the Crown) and lieutenant to that same donatary, and he may have given rise to another branch of the same family.
