A century ago there was heavy emigration of Madeirans to British Guiana, and many settled in the city of Georgetown. Among them was João António de Nóbrega, a native of the parish (freguesia) of Monte (‘hill’), who in that city took the initiative in founding the first Catholic church built there, which was dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus (Sagrado Coração de Jesus). He left his name bound up with this great undertaking, earning the highest praise of the whole Portuguese colony in that British possession.
