The French politician, writer and orator Count de Montalembert stayed in Madeira in 1844 for his wife's health. In Funchal he wrote a celebrated letter to the Cambridge Camden Society.

This well-known French politician and man of letters, one of the greatest orators of his day, stayed on this island from 26 January to 4 March 1844 because of his wife’s health. He landed in Funchal on a day of violent storm, and his life and those of his travelling companions were in serious danger. In this city he wrote, and later published in France, a long letter addressed to the Cambridge Camden Society, which became famous.
