Marquis of Pombal Mission
Original title: Missão Marquês de Pombal
A Funchal branch, founded in 1913, of the Lisbon association «O Vintém das Escolas», promoting liberal and civic education and maintaining a school in the Rua de Santa Maria.
It was founded on 21 March 1913, and its aims are the same as those of the association ‘O Vintém das Escolas’, to which it is subordinate and which was established in Lisbon in 1901 on the initiative of the late José de Moura Barata Feio Terenas.
The statutes of ‘O Vintém das Escolas’ show that this institution is devoted to promoting liberal and civic education. Its stated aims are to spread instruction among the children of the common people, to promote the moral and intellectual development and progress of the working classes, to help and relieve children of proven poverty, to promote the federation of independent schools and to establish prizes for teachers and pupils who prove worthy of them. The same institution’s programme also includes founding labour exchanges, schools and popular libraries, and holding lectures and literary and scientific talks.
The Marquis of Pombal Mission (Missão Marquês de Pombal) maintains a school in Funchal, in the Rua de Santa Maria. Its attendance today (1921) is 40 pupils, although at first it had an attendance of 105 pupils of both sexes. Its income comes from members’ subscriptions and from balls, charity fairs, etc., held from time to time.
