Misericórdia of Porto Santo

Original title: Misericórdia do Porto Santo

The Misericórdia confraternity of Porto Santo, based in a small chapel called the Igreja da Misericórdia in the town; its statutes were approved in 1767, though it is older, and it never had a hospital.

In the town (vila) of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’) there is a small chapel with a little house attached, known as the Misericórdia church (Igreja da Misericórdia). It was the seat of an old confraternity of that name, the date of whose foundation we do not know. Although a royal decree (alvará régio) of 9 April 1767 approved its statutes (compromisso), it is nonetheless certain that it was created at a more remote date. It never had a hospital. We do not know what services it provided, and at present it gives no assistance of any kind to the poor.

Chronology
  • A royal charter approved the statutes of the Misericórdia of Porto Santo.
