Metade (valley)

Original title: Metade (Vale da)

The Vale da Metade is a large valley in the interior of Madeira, admired from a viewpoint on the Levada do Juncal about 15 km from Funchal, and known for its panorama and rare plants.

Seen from the belvedere (mirante) built by order of the Public Works Department on the Levada do Juncal (‘rush bed’), this great valley offers one of the most vast and majestic panoramas of the interior of Madeira. At the head of the valley rise Pico Ruivo (‘russet’) and Pico das Torres (‘towers’), the highest peaks on the island, and on its precipitous sides, in many places clothed with trees, grow many of the most beautiful and rare plants of Madeira. The belvedere on the Levada do Juncal is about 15 kilometres from Funchal.
