Mendes (Coelho)

Coelho Mendes was an Azorean resident of Funchal who published the poetry volume Flores Agrestes around 1885; the entry also notes two earlier and later books of the same title.

Nearly forty years ago an Azorean with the surname Coelho Mendes lived in Funchal. Around 1885 he published in this city a volume of poems entitled Flores Agrestes, and he also published a short pamphlet in a controversy he carried on with Canon Aires Pacheco.

João Fortunato de Oliveira had earlier published in Funchal, in 1860, a volume of poems under the title Flores Agrestes, and many years later, in 1903, Manuel Ribeiro also published in this city a small volume of verse with the same title.
