Warts
Original title: Verrugas
Folk remedies for warts in Madeira, using salt or the sap of greater celandine, with a note on the Visconde do Porto da Cruz's later booklet on the Madeiran flora in popular medicine.
Warts are removed by applying salt or the yellow, caustic sap of greater celandine, a plant that is common in Madeira. Many people suppose that, for the salt to take effect, it must be thrown into the fire after the wart has been rubbed with it.
Long after the publication (in 1921) of this note on country medicine in the archipelago, the Viscount of Porto da Cruz published a pamphlet entitled A Flora Madeirense na Medicina Popular.
