Bronchitis, coughs and colds
Original title: Bronquites, tosses e defluxos
Rural remedies for bronchitis, coughs and colds, chiefly honey and hot herbal infusions, plus mustard plasters, spirit rubs and foot baths.
They are treated with bees’ honey and hot infusions of ground ivy, sage, eucalyptus, hyssop, horehound, mullein, borage, selvageira, and fennel and coriander seeds (fruits). Mustard plasters on the chest, rubs with spirit (aguardente, distilled from sugar cane or wine) and hot foot baths are widely used for severe bronchitis, whereas simple colds usually pass without any medicine.
Watercress with sugar, warmed in the oven, is much used to combat coughs.
