Martins (Agostinho)

Agostinho Martins (1841–1909), distinguished Madeiran violinist and founder of several Funchal musical societies.

A distinguished Madeiran musician, born in 1841, who died in Funchal on 9 April 1909. He became a pupil of the celebrated violinist Agostinho Robio when he was only 10 years old, and later grew into a most distinguished musician, equal in knowledge and performance to the best Portuguese and foreign violinists.

He founded the Academia Marcos Portugal, the Sociedade de Concertos Funchalense and the local band (filarmónica) Restauração de Portugal, and in the last years of his life he organised the sextet that bore his name and earned a distinguished reputation here in Madeira.
