Maracujá

Entry on the passion-flower species (Passifloraceae) known in Madeira as maracujá, noting which are most prized on the island.

The Passifloraceae to which Madeirans give this name are the following: Passiflora ligularis, from Peru; P. edulis, from Brazil; Tacsonia mollissima, from Quito; T. Van Wolxemii, from New Granada; and T. Parritae, from Tolima. The genus Passiflora differs from the genus Tassonia in having a very short calyx tube. The first species (yellow or English maracujá) and the second (purple maracujá) are the most prized on the island. The juice of the fruit of P. edulis is said to be useful in treating cancerous diseases.
