Madre de Deus (Friar Francisco da)

Original title: Madre de Deus (Frei Francisco da)

Franciscan friar, professed in 1613 and guardian of the Santa Cruz convent, author of a mystical book; possibly Madeiran.

He was professed in the Seraphic Order (Ordem Seráfica) in 1613 and was guardian of the Franciscan convent in the town (vila) of Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’). Some describe him as Madeiran, but it is not certain that he was born on this island. He was a man of vast learning and wrote a mystical book that is remarkable for the beauty of its language. (See Bib. Lusit. II-165).
