Maçaroco (Echium nervosum)

Maçaroco (Echium nervosum) is a blue-flowered shrub of the borage family, common near the south coast of Madeira. Its black wood was once used for inlay work.

A shrub of the family Boraginaceae, common near the shore on the south coast of Madeira. It can reach 2 metres in height and has blue flowers arranged in ovoid, generally dense panicles. It yields a black wood that was formerly used for inlaid work (embutidos). Echium candicans is a shrub of 5 to 15 decimetres, easily distinguished from E. nervosum by its elongated, more or less cylindrical panicles.
