Lambert (Count of)

Original title: Lambert (Conde de)

Count Alexandre Carlos de Lambert, a Russian general who retired to Madeira after a fatal duel-by-lot in Poland and lived at the Quinta das Angústias.

Lambert (Count of)

General Count Alexandre Carlos de Lambert, aide-de-camp to the Empress of Russia, spent some time in Madeira, having acquired as his residence the Quinta das Angústias (‘sorrows’), on Rua da Imperatriz Dona Amélia (‘Empress Amélia street’).

It is said that in Poland the Count of Lambert had a serious quarrel with a Russian general, whose name we do not know. The two eventually agreed that whichever of them the lot fell upon should kill himself by taking a poisonous draught. The lot went against the general, who at once carried out what he had so rashly bound himself to do. Shortly afterwards the count withdrew to Madeira, deeply distressed by the outcome of the quarrel in which he had become involved.

The Count of Lambert, who was born around 1816, was in Madeira in 1863; he visited Lisbon and London that year but returned to Madeira in September. He died around 1866.
