Kirkpatrick (R.)

British Museum naturalist who studied the zoology of Porto Santo and described the sponge Melia normani, found there by Adolfo C. de Noronha.

A naturalist at the British Museum who visited Madeira and Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’), carrying out various zoological studies on the latter island. He wrote a short work entitled On Melia Normani, a sponge with a siliseous and calcareous skeleton (London, 1911). The curious sponge described in this work was found in the waters off Porto Santo by the Madeiran naturalist Adolfo César de Noronha.

In one of his works Randolph Kirkpatrick says that he found Eozoon canadense, the oldest known fossil, on Porto Santo, but this discovery awaits confirmation.
