Junta do Desembargo do Paço

The Junta do Desembargo do Paço, a royal tribunal established in Madeira on 10 September 1811, which among other duties nominated the members of the local governing class who were to serve on the municipal Senate.

This body was established in Madeira on 10 September 1811. One of its duties was to name the members of the governing body (governança, the notables eligible for municipal office) who were to serve on the Senate (senado, the municipal council). For the warrant (provisão) appointing the councillors (vereadores), the Funchal Municipal Council (Câmara Municipal do Funchal) paid the secretary of the Junta a fee of 6,400 réis (old Portuguese money of account; 1$000 = 1,000 réis, 1:000$000 = one conto = 1,000,000 réis).
