Justices of the peace

Original title: Juízes de Paz

x

The decree of 16 May 1832 created a justice of the peace in each of the parishes that made up the jurisdictions, the judge to be elected by the people. The justices of the peace were intended to reconcile the parties, and from 1835 to 1840 they carried out duties that had previously belonged to the judges of orphans.

The decree of 29 March 1890 laid down that justices of the peace should be appointed by the Government, and that of 5 June 1905 fixed the composition of the justice-of-the-peace districts of Funchal, Ponta do Sol, Santa Cruz and São Vicente.
