Jorge (Francisco)

Architect and engineer appointed by royal warrant in 1595 to direct Madeira's fortification works; father of João Bartolomeu.

By royal decree (alvará régio) of 10 February 1595, this architect and engineer was charged with directing the fortification works on this island. He was the father of João Bartolomeu, whom we have already discussed in this Elucidário. (See Disc. dos Arch. e Eng. Port., vol. 2, p. 38.)

Chronology
  • A royal warrant appointed a fortificador (named Francisco Jorge or Jerónimo Jorge in different entries) to direct the fortification works of Madeira.
