Jardim (Luiz António)

Luiz António Jardim (c.1780–1825) was a Funchal lawyer and poet who sat on Funchal's first constitutional council and was elected substitute deputy to the Cortes in 1822.

He was a bachelor (bacharel, university graduate) in law of the University of Coimbra (Universidade de Coimbra), a member of the Society of Friends of the Sciences and Arts (Sociedade dos Amigos das Sciencias e Artes) and a lawyer in Funchal, where, we presume, he was born around 1780. He was a member of the first Constitutional Council of Funchal, and in 1822 he was elected by this island substitute deputy to the ordinary Cortes (Portuguese parliament). At the press of O Patriota Funchalense (‘The Funchal Patriot’) he published a Colecção Poética, a volume of 122 pages, and, under the title Parabéns poetico-politicos, an oitava, eighteen sonnets and an ode, in a pamphlet of 29 pages. He died in Funchal on 14 February 1825.
