Entry on official time (summer time) introduced by decree of December 1916 and applied to the Sé clock in Funchal in January 1917 despite the council president's objection.
It was established by Decree no. 2,922 of 30 December 1916. On 31 January of the following year the military authorities asked the Council to put the clock of Funchal Cathedral (Sé) forward by one hour at 11 p.m. The request was granted, but the president, Dr Fernando Tolentino da Costa, declared that he saw no benefit whatever in the measure for Madeira.
