Henriques Pinto (Luiz de Miranda)
Luiz de Miranda Henriques Pinto was the first governor of Madeira to bear the title of governor and captain-general and the last to govern under Castilian rule; he proclaimed D. João IV on the island in 1641.
He succeeded his father, Luiz M. Henriques Pinto, and was the first governor of this archipelago to bear the title of governor and captain-general, a title retained until 1834; he was also the last to govern Madeira under Castilian rule. His appointment, made by the vicereine of Portugal Margaret of Savoy, Duchess of Mantua, is dated 22 May 1640, and he took office on 6 June of the same year. It was he who, on 11 January 1641, proclaimed John IV on this island. See Restoration of Portugal.
