Georg Hartung was a German geologist who visited Madeira in 1853–54 and wrote the most complete geological description of Madeira and Porto Santo (1864).
A distinguished German geologist who visited the Madeira archipelago in the winter of 1853 to 1854. Works: Geologische Beschreibung der Inseln Madeira und Porto Santo, Leipzig, 1864.
This is the most complete work yet published on the geology of the archipelago. It also includes an account of the Madeiran fossils studied by Professor Carlos Mayer, some of which were previously unknown to science.
