Gramacho

Surname, now thought extinct in Madeira, apparently originating with the early settler Rui Gramacho, landholder in Santa Cruz.

The origin of this family surname here in Madeira, which we believe is now extinct, seems to have been the fidalgo (nobleman of the lesser nobility) Rui Gramacho, who was one of the first settlers and held sesmaria (royal land grant to settlers on condition of cultivation) lands in Santa Cruz (‘Holy Cross’). In the parish (freguesia) of Sant'Ana there is a locality (sítio) called Achada do Gramacho (‘Gramacho’s plateau’).
