Graça
Locality on Porto Santo named after a ruined octagonal chapel of Nossa Senhora da Graça, whose enlarged rebuilding begun in the early 19th century was never finished.
Abroad
A locality (sítio) on the island of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’). An old chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Graça (Our Lady of Grace) once stood here and gave the place its name. As it was badly ruined, its reconstruction on a larger scale than the original was begun in the early 19th century, on the initiative of the governor of that island, Manuel Inácio de Avelar Brotero. The rebuilding was never completed, however, and today the chapel is reduced to a heap of ruins. It was unusual in being octagonal, and it is said to have reproduced in miniature a famous church in Italy.
