Map: Porto Santo (5)

An inhabited locality on the island of Porto Santo (‘holy harbour’). At the spot in this locality called Graça (‘grace’) there stood an old chapel dedicated to Our Lady of Grace (Nossa Senhora da Graça), which gave the place its name. As it was badly ruined, its rebuilding on a larger scale was undertaken at the beginning of the 19th century, but the construction was never completed, and today only some ruins remain. It had a certain architectural pretension and an octagonal interior, and it is said somewhere that it is a miniature reproduction of a famous sanctuary in Italy. It has 16 households (fogos, literally 'hearths') and 70 inhabitants.

Chronology
  • Rebuilding of the chapel of Nossa Senhora da Graça on Porto Santo on a larger scale was begun but never completed.
