Gaspar (Alfredo Rodrigues)
Funchal-born naval officer and ballistics expert who became minister of the colonies and Portuguese prime minister in 1924.
He was born in this city on 8 August 1865, the son of Manuel Rodrigues Gaspar and Dona Maria Augusta Gaspar. He completed the course in marine engineering in 1885 and that for naval officers in 1888; he holds the rank of captain in the navy (capitão de mar e guerra) and has been a professor at the Naval School since 1898. He has devoted himself in particular to the study of ballistics and explosives, which he teaches, and is regarded as a true authority on these subjects. He represented our country at the congress of applied chemistry held in London in 1909, where he presented an important paper on the comparative study of some of the stability tests for explosives.
In 1911 he was elected a deputy to the Constituent Assembly, and in 1913 a senator. He was minister of the colonies in 1914 and 1915, and returned to head the same ministry in 1919, in the government led by Mr Sá Cardoso. He was president of the council of ministers in 1924. He died in Lisbon on 30 November 1938.

Birthplace of Gaspar.
The capital of the archipelago and seat of the principal captaincy, where settlement began; it was made a vila c.1451–52. Its bay, the widest in the archipelago, lies between Ponta do Garajau and Ponta da Cruz and offers sheltered anchorage, though its harbour had never been studied oceanographically. The Elucidário discusses it as a health resort with climate data and records the January 1906 disturbances, the Danish prince's visit in May 1846 and recent volcanic cones in the area.
